Rural residential

3.1.4skos:Concept

https://nzlum.landcareresearch.co.nz/landuse/concept/rural_residential

Definition

Residential properties with low-intensity (non-commercial) land management practices on land in rural or peri-urban areas.

Scope note

Typically featuring larger parcel sizes amidst agricultural or natural surroundings. Concordant with the ‘Rural lifestyle zone’ from the Zone Framework Standard.

Usage notes

As a general guideline, properties with a dwelling, and between 0.4 ha and 2 ha in size, should be considered rural residential. Larger properties should be considered under class 2, especially if the zone context is non-residential, and even if they are declared residential or lifestyle in the District Valuation Roll.
Properties in this size interval and without a dwelling could be in transition to residential.

History note

In land fragmentation analyses, parcels greater than 2 ha in size (with or without a dwelling) have been considered non-residential. The term lifestyle is disfavoured in this context, as it is not a landuse but rather it indicates that some form of primary production does occur but that it is not the resident's primary source of income. Thus the term 'lifestyle' reflects a motivation for a particular land use, but is not itself a useful land use.
